'Choosing BIM opened up a world for me'

'Choosing BIM opened up a world for me'

Personally, I always strive to do repetitive things faster and more efficiently. When I was looking for a Minor, I also wanted this to be central. With the little knowledge I had, it was soon clear: I wanted to immerse myself in BIM(s). During the past six months, I therefore took the BIM Minor. During that time, I spent my practical days at Based.

So much more than modelling

Within Based, I soon discovered that BIM is not just modelling, but so much more. Probably no surprise for many, but for me a new world opened up. Fortunately, Based gave me the freedom to broaden my knowledge. Every week, I wrote down new abbreviations in a booklet. Only to find out what exactly they meant ... It started with IFC and basic ILS, to which it moved on to big data and basically everything involved in a digital model.

The freedom to gain knowledge also meant that I was welcome to join external parties. I made good use of this. It is extremely instructive to look behind the scenes of several parties and see how they deal with BIM and digital construction. Within this period, I not only had the opportunity to meet clients of Based, but also a number of pioneers in the BIM world. Companies and individuals from whom I learned an awful lot.

Top of the BIM mountain

From my own experience, I didn't really know what to expect from the minor in BIM. But I am very glad that I eventually chose it. By taking it, you see both the similarities and differences regarding how companies deal with information transfer. And how important this will only become in the coming years. The information I gathered on this is just the tip of the iceberg of everything I learned about BIM at Based. There is so much more. Fortunately, this only triggers my curiosity!

Social techie

Finally, I do want to look back at the team days within Based, where the team really looks at where they can improve and support each other. Doing a talent analysis like this also gives you a piece of yourself. A nice extra that I didn't think I would do during my minor. A piece of storytelling was also discussed during these days. Super interesting to see how you can get people on board with your story. During the team days, a nice name for this club came up in me: the social techies. Because of the developments within Based and all the knowledge and know-how present - and the skills to pass this on - they live up to this name.

From internship to part-time job

I enjoyed the past year so much that I was glad when I was asked if I wanted to stay on. After all, I am far from finished learning about BIM. Thank you team Based for this great opportunity to become a social techie too.
